Exporting opens a far larger market, and India actively supports exporters. The paperwork looks heavy at first but follows a clear path. Here is how to start.
You need an Import Export Code from DGFT, GST registration, and a current bank account that handles foreign payments. Registering with the Export Promotion Council for your product also opens support and leads.
Start with a product you can source or make reliably. Find overseas buyers through export marketplaces, trade fairs, buyer directories and your council. Verify buyers and start with a small order to test the relationship.
A typical export needs a commercial invoice, packing list, shipping bill and transport document. A freight forwarder or customs house agent handles most of this and is worth the fee on early shipments.
For a new overseas buyer, use advance payment or a letter of credit through your bank rather than open credit. Getting paid safely matters more than winning the order.
