How to import from China to India: a practical guide

China offers low prices on a huge range of goods, but importing has real costs and risks. Done carefully it works well. Here is the practical path.

Find and verify suppliers

Use established sourcing platforms, and verify each supplier carefully: business licence, references, and a paid sample before any bulk order. Photos alone tell you nothing about real quality.

Count the full landed cost

The unit price is only part of it. Add shipping, customs duty, GST on imports, clearing charges and local transport to get the true landed cost. A cheap unit price can vanish once these are added, so calculate before you commit.

Handle customs and paperwork

You need an Import Export Code and correct HS codes for your goods. A customs house agent handles clearance, duty and documentation, which is worth it while you learn the process.

Manage the risk

Start with a small order, use secure payment terms, and never send full advance to an unverified supplier. Check quality on arrival and build up volume only with suppliers who prove reliable.
